Research and Evaluation

The Student Development Health Education (SDHE) unit is involved in a variety of ongoing research, assessment and grant activities, both within the unit and campus-wide.

Program Assessment

SDHE conducts ongoing assessment of the learning outcomes of the CHS 179 “Life Skills for College Women and Men” and CHS 19 Fiat Lux seminars offered by the unit.  The Life Skills assessment has documented positive changes in the areas of stress reduction, improved mental health, stronger communication skills, more positive self-care as well as understanding of self and others.  The assessment program for Life Skills received the “Emerging Best Practice in Student Affairs Assessment” Award from the American College Personnel Association in 2007. This award is designed to recognize innovative and high quality student affairs evaluation and assessment plans.

Alcohol Harm Reduction

SDHE coordinates a variety of projects in the area of alcohol harm reduction including, participation in a five-year UC system-wide study of harm reduction and environmental management; participation in a California Office of Traffic Safety grant project focusing on reducing harm as a result of drinking and driving; and evaluation of the population level outcomes of UCLA’s participation in the AlcoholEdu online educational course.

Campus-wide Assessment of Student Development and Wellness

Periodic surveys of UCLA student attitudes and behaviors are conducted to better understand the campus population.  Topics include: mental health, development, involvement in campus life, alcohol use and consequences, sexual behavior, and self-concept.
